Mark Marono tried to raise the issues of bad science, warmie scientists who’d resiled from their previous position and whether global warming was actually taking place at all.
Predictably the Newsnight presenter either had no comprehension whatsoever of the issues, or was controlling the debate to stifle criticism of warmie science by deniers.
Watson’s aside at the end just illustrates the arrogance of the warmie brigade.
Of all the people to choose for this debate they would have to go for a gabshite like Morano. Not that the Prof wasn't as well, but on UK telly the result of that contest is always going to be well-meaning enviro-boffin 1, annoying American twat 0.
Perhaps Newsnight wanted to balance the drubbing that Bob Ward took on Sky earlier in the day. See below.

As far as I could determine, Prof. Watson (in a friendly gesture, perhaps, of transatlantic communication) appears to use the American pronunciation, “asshole.”
Bit depressing. because I basically agree with the American guy but he comes across as a bully and (to be honest) an asshole! The professor comes across as nerdy and put-upon. The American is Goliath and the professor is David; guess who we are supposed to sympathise with?
I think that Newsnight viewers probably got the message here that the AGW believers are right but faced with an extremely powerful opposition which they are ill-equipped to deal with. Given the widespread Government support for AGW, I believe this is a wholly incorrect view of the situation, but nevertheless this interview represents a PR victory for the AGW faithful.

Prof Andrew Watson ("My supervisor was James Lovelock, whose view of the earth as a whole system ("Gaia") has influenced me ever since") is typical of the breed.
Marc Morano was the wrong person to have on. He was right, but objectionable (why not Mcintyre, McKitrick or any of the UK skeptics that are qualified to debate with Watson?). The Beeb knew that, though, didn't they.
A victory for the AGW faithful, as you say, Mr President.
AGW fearmongering has brought otherwise unimaginable prestige and funding to a small corner of the Earth sciences. They continue to push their statistically inept, activist mindset because many have built their entire careers on work which is either junk that does not establish their hypothesis or readily falsifiable by more credible analysis.
Many of the most important 'Team' papers on AGW don't meet the most basis competency requirements of degree level actuarial science or computational statistics (of which dendrochronology is a rather disreputable sub-branch).
A half-decent paper paper of the genre asserts that "The ability to pick and choose which samples to use is an advantage unique to dendroclimatology" (under Figure 7).
Even within the context of that particular paper, and the specific meaning the author (Esper) intended, this statement is junk-science garbage and typical of the whole field. What utter horse shit. And yet, Esper himself is a lot better than most!
Another paper by Esper rediscovers the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA) - Figure 2B.
They'd been lost, apparently, and probably never happed, such was the state of dendrochronology at the time of the Hockey Stick.
Esper then goes to considerable length to say than he work is still a good fit with the Hockey Stick graph because they correlate well on short timescales, when the whole point of the Hockey Stick was long term cooling followed by, apparently, castrophic recent warming - a clubby little bunch these Dendros.
Anyone reading up on dendroclimatology would be well advised to keep their eye on sample count as a function of time, sample selection and sample inhomogeneity.
Oh, and don't listen to what dendroclimatologists have to say about their own work. At this stage, the ones speaking out in defense of it appear to be the least honest (either Old Timers with funding/reputation on the line or Young Guns looking to improve their prospects by sticking up for the Team in its hour of need, regardless of the scientific merits of their field).
The papers are out there, make up your own mind.

In the paper DETECTING STRESS USING EYE BLINKS AND BRAIN ACTIVITY FROM EEG SIGNALS by
M. Haak, S.Bos, S.Panic, L.J.M.Rothkrantz at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands Defence Academy, researchers concluded "Our results show that there is a strong correlation between eye blink frequency and emotional stress."
Of course, you don't need to know that to know Dr. Watson is a liar. Just look at the science - the unadulturated science, that is.
And since he is a liar, it isn't character assassination to call him one.

The emails reveal tampering. The guy in the vid admits tweaking the data. The emails reveal "tricking". The guy in the vid reveals he can't stand scrutiny. He said he couldn't speak about lack of information under the FOIA but he continues to belt his views out despite the data has not been subjected to scrutiny. The guy in the vid is an utter asshole. MAGICC/SCENGEN is climate software. A CDROM based programme which can be used on any home computer. The thing which caught my eye here is why call it "MAGIC". Why not just say it's a climate forecasting code which explains what it is. I got the list of all the emails from the CRU sent me on my Google link which is picking up information whenever it lands. This time it came from The New York Times , so I was keen to have a look at the emails and found this one where the guy mentions 'magic'.

I find it amusing that Watson is complaining about ad hominem attacks arising from the disclosures of the climategate email threads. AGW skeptics have been subject to such attacks forever, and this is without the benefit of self incriminating, supporting documentation for the charges.
While I agree with him that an out of context email doesn't say a lot, several hundred email threads with a decidedly common theme does. The emails go back about 10 years. The first half of this history covers a thread or two per month. During the last 4-5 years, several threads per week are represented in the sample, all the way up until October of this year.
From a statistical standpoint, this sampling is quite representative of their callous disregard for scientific viewpoints that didn't align with their own. More representative than say, temperature reconstructions based on proxy data.
